Particle Shifts (2007)
Materials: gravel, plastic baskets, steel aircraft cable, 3-channel video | Dimensions: 5,000 square foot space
Process: An installation created during a two-week residency at the Darling Foundry (Montreal) in their main space. Considering its foundry past, volunteers were asked to sift gravel using plastic baskets. The larger stones that were extracted remained in the baskets and built up a form suggestive of a civilization. A steel cable structure was hung to consider the gravity and light of the space and to visually amplify the sifting and refinement process.
Video of the sifting process. Each volunteer approached the task with a different sense of efficiency.
